@hannahkeiver —Needle ice emerges as slender ice columns that take the shape of needles, resulting from groundwater freezing. This natural phenomenon takes place when the soil temperature remains above 0 °C (32 °F), while the air’s surface temperature drops below 0 °C (32 °F). Through capillary action, subterranean liquid water ascends to the surface, freezing along the way and contributing to the development of elongated ice formations resembling needles. Typically, this process occurs during nighttime when the air temperature reaches its lowest point.
