Belonging to one of the greatest series of his career, Claude Monet’s ‘Peupliers au bord de l’Epte, temps couvert’ stands among the finest depictions of the tree-lined banks of the river Epte.

In the spring of 1891, Monet began work on a group of twenty-four paintings of these poplar trees. As Sotheby’s @newmanhelena explains, not long after Monet began to paint them, the nearby town decided to auction off the trees.

As he relayed the story years later, Monet asked the owner of the saw mill “what price he was going to buy them for. ‘Go higher’ he said to the timber merchant. ‘I’ll pay the difference but let me have time to paint them.”

‘Peupliers au bord de l’Epte, temps couvert,’ originally from the collection of Bertha and Potter Palmer, belongs to a subset of the series painted in a squarer format—the broader canvas allowing for the sweeping serpentine curves of the line of poplar trees. The work is coming to auction for the first time in nearly six decades in the Modern Evening Auction at #SothebysNewYork on 13 November, presented in partnership with @samsungus. #SothebysModern #ClaudeMonet
