Friends, meet Qais Amrien, a 16 year old boy from Aqaba, #Jordan. I had the pleasure of having dinner at his home, where his mom prepared a local specialty called "mansef." It was a DELICIOUS meal on a special day, the story of which I may tell another time, but for now what I wanted to share was one of the reasons we got invited to their home. It turns out that all the way in Jordan, Qais is a fan of Hawaii Five-0! In fact, he's seen every episode. He rides a #Harley like Chin did and even wants to be a cop, all thanks to a tv show that shoots halfway around the world.
Throughout our dinner he peppered me with questions (in excellent English) about Steve, Danny and Kono, and with each one I was more and more surprised about his depth of #H50 knowledge and enthusiasm. When he was finally satisfied I told him how impressed I was, and he looked up at me with a huge, toothy teenage grin and said, "I can't miss it!" Actors may not cure cancer. We may not be be the architects of peace in the Middle East, but our interaction reminded me what a privilege -and responsibility - it is to be associated with anything that brings a smile to a child's face, whether they're next door or a world away.
It was an even more powerful reminder that the next time I see images of violence coming from the Middle East -or anywhere- I will remember this photo and know that those affected are so much more than just an image and a sound bite. These are people who share the same interests we do. They have the same hopes and dreams for their families, but by virtue of a simple twist of fate, were born into a place and experience much different from our own in the States.
I am grateful to Qais, as I am grateful to his dad, Ahmed, for his expert guidance and warm hearted generosity, mom "Juju," who home cooked a phenomenal meal, and his KPop loving sis, Rama, for these reminders. Meeting them was easily one of the highlights of my trip.
