Wearing vintage clothing is one of many ways to make more responsible fashion choices, giving a new lease of life to pieces which are no longer wanted by their previous owners. According to a 2016 McKinsey report, the fashion industry produces over 100 billion items of clothing worldwide each year, with 3/5 of those ending up in landfill within the same 12 months. Low quality, 'disposable' fast fashion is playing a huge part in this overproduction and needless waste, but much of the vintage clothing available to us now was made many years ago to the highest quality standards, designed to last, and to be repaired, altered, handed down and cherished. Stella is part of the Kering group, who are global leaders in sustainable luxury, supporting their brands to care about their impact on the planet, on climate change, on natural resources and empowering future generations. Stella McCartney has spent years developing luxury products using materials such as regenerated cashmere, leather alternatives, wood, recycled fabrics, organic cotton and forest-friendly fabrics. As a brand, Stella has never used leather, fur or skins in its products for ethical and environmental reasons. Leather impacts are driven by land use and greenhouse gas emissions associated with animal rearing, as well as the energy use and water consumption requirements of tanneries. For example, in Brazil the cattle industry has been a driver of deforestation, resulting in a loss of important ecosystem services and is inefficient in terms of production per hectare. As a result, typical leather from Brazil has very high environmental impact per kg when compared to synthetic alternatives. Photo 4: Vintage @ralphlauren shirt.
