I was recently talking with my mom about how we’d always try so hard to have a perfect Christmas. Find the perfect tree, make the perfect pie, or find just the right gift. But as you know, it’s not always the most wonderful time of the year. Sometimes it’s actually the hardest and for many it can be one of the loneliest. Maybe it’s the first year there’s a vacant space at the table and every tradition is just a painful reminder. Maybe your loneliness today has you hurting so much you find it hard to see a tomorrow.

This week I got a courageous call from someone I love very much who has been in a difficult place, couldn’t see a way out and reached out for help. We immediately drove to pick him up and bring him to a safe environment to receive professional support. I’m proud of him for calling and being so brave. It was the right decision. Because he is NOT ALONE. There IS HOPE. And he IS SO LOVED.

It’s moments like this that remind me why it’s important for us to cultivate kindness this time of year and give people one of the greatest gifts: gratitude. Telling people how much they mean to us and how grateful we are to have them in our lives. The holidays can hurt the most, but they don’t have to and we can be the reason.
