Way before it was cool to talk about sustainability, Eileen Fisher was a leader in developing and implementing best practices to address the negative consequences of our industry for the last decade. She made the commitment 5 years ago to transform her business into becoming 100% sustainable by 2020 and has collected over a million pieces from her own line to re-use and upcycle, extending the life of the garments she’s created over the last 10 years. And not only has she been evolving her own business, demonstrating that social consciousness can be scaled, she’s opened up her doors to her Tiny Factory and invited the world to come share and learn from her work.
It’s one thing to have individual knowledge but to make that knowledge institutional is a game changer. No one understands that more than her.
Eileen once said of her original commitment to changing her half billion dollar company, “You just have to say YES and make the commitment even if you don’t know what you’re doing.” Well she’s figuring it out and inviting us all along for the ride.
There is no one more deserving of the CFDA Award for Positive Change than @eileenfisherny and we are beyond honored to have presented this award to her Monday night.

To play Devil's advocate: Where is the actual proof her textiles are being up cycled for new fabrics? Mind sharing the list of her factories that she uses for production. There's terrible green washing in the fashion industry and unless you work in the actual factories overseas, it's duplicitous to sell such stories to customers. Transparency means making the information readily available. - Fiona

@publicschoolnyc I did more research and found an article about Tiny Factory. It looks promising and seems like a real sustainable solution to managing textile waste. I quite like the idea of having the producer/brand pay for the cost of sorting its own clothing waste instead of the taxpayer funded initiatives. I am very impressed @eileenfisherny.

@jenfashionstudio I worked in an agency that represented Eileen. @publicschoolnyc is 100% correct. She is a leader in sustainability. Hoping that more companies are inspired by her.

@jenfashionstudio her factory is in Irvington, NY. Everything that they’ve collected gets upcycled there not overseas. We’ve seen the entire process. Trust it ain’t green washing.
