I knew I had one shot to impress them. I tried a character called “Jimmy the Sports Guy” and it worked. We laughed every day. We busted each other’s balls relentlessly. Bean was weird. He decided he was from Norway. He is not. He would disappear mysteriously. We never saw him after lunch.  He was obsessed with Pluto and the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (the song, not the disaster). He had thousands of CDs and listened to Christmas music every day.  He had a hedgehog. His cousin was Petula Clark.  He once gave me a dog named Scamp. Bean supported me always. When a rival radio station offered me a morning show of my own, Bean went into our program director’s office and offered ten thousand dollars of his annual salary to keep me at KROQ. I didn’t take his money, but decided to stay.  We’d been through too much together. Of all the friends with whom I have never, ever socialized – I might feel closest to Bean. In our five years working together, I cannot recall an unpleasant moment between us. When I left KROQ to pursue a career in television, Bean and Kevin actively and enthusiastically cheered me on, helping in any way they could and seemed to take real pleasure in watching me blossom into the big, hairy flower I’ve become. Next month would mark 30 years of The Kevin and Bean Show. So many strangers tell me what a great part of their childhood the show was. Some listened on their way to school with their parents and continued to listen while driving their own kids to school. It is sad for me and for many of us to see them part ways, but I suppose we were lucky to have them together for so long. I owe them both a lot. Farewell Bean, you strange and beautiful man. You are one of the smartest, quickest, funniest people I’ve ever worked with and one of the finest broadcasters in America. I hope London is everything you hope it will be and, if it isn’t, come back.
