Short Text for Kaohsiung Film Festival International Short Film Competition - ⑴
Last October, I was fortunate to attend the Kaohsiung Film Festival 高雄電影節 as a jury for the International Short Film Competition. Here are a few short thoughts on these unforgettable days.
At center-stage for my trip was the 30 short films in competition. These were amazing well made, and I could feel the energies of the newest generation of Taiwanese filmmakers.
I’ll mention a few here which left a particularly strong impression on me.
I’ll first mention the Jury Prize winner, TIPTOE by LIN I-Ju.
I had a few thoughts on Lin’s point of view, her gaze.
Through suitable camera positioning, she created an brilliant cinematography.
Where you fight to place your camera won’t simply shine a light on your story, but will create a bright treasure for Taiwanese film.
till next time by Paulie HUANG Chih-Chia.
I commend you for your abilities in filming water from many sides,
and for taking the absolute to show it in relative terms.
Rising Sun by CHENG Ya-Chih.
I loved your high artistry, showing the distance between two young boys in nature.
The Sound of Falling by LIN Chien-Yu.
Portrays a spiritual world in three dimensions and conveys the soul of the characters.
The last sequence of this film is a single long-shot, and seems to have required careful planning for its success.
I was impressed that director Lin was able to achieve this.
To all the winners, the filmmakers I mentioned here, and to all the participants, I have tremendous respect for all these young filmmakers, and look forward to their next works.
