Sick fade, bro

A lot of people asked questions about how I knew something was wrong and wanting more detail around Ham’s adventure. I’ll outline more below and will try to answer questions in the comments.

It started at about 11pm - Ham sounded like he had a hairball, or was at least about to throw up. He tried 3 times and nothing came out. That’s actually not super uncommon for him. He gets hairballs pretty frequently and sometimes cannot get them up the first time. At that point I usually give him laxatone (hairball gel). I put a small amount on him and he licked it, but then went to throw up again - still nothing came out. After that he seemed OK so I stayed up with him to monitor. It happened a few more times in the middle of the night - nothing ever came up other than bile. At that point I put a full strip of laxatone on his paw and he wouldn’t lick it off. Ham, likee most cats, is obsessively clean and would never leave something on his paw. That’s when I knew something wasn’t right. I tried giving him every kind of treat I have and his wet food and he wouldn’t eat anything. At this point I called our vet and they were able to see him immediately so I didn’t have to go right to the ER. They ran every test to make sure he was good. They also took x-rays. They were able to see he had something large in his stomach, but couldn’t really tell where it was (organs overlap so they couldn’t tell if it was in his stomach or starting to move along). They sent us over to the ER where they did an ultrasound and felt they could get it out without surgery. Thankfully, they were correct and after about 10 hours at different vets and a lot of sedation, Hammy was able to come home with me that night.

Ham has a crazy amount of fluff (or he did before I shaved him). I regularly brush him - some days more, some days less depending on his mood. I have the furminator, the brush glove and my personal favorite the sleekEZ. He has special hairball control wetfood and gets some hairball treats which he doesn’t really love. I also use laxatone often. This is something long hair cats have to deal with and usually their bodies can process it. (Cont’d in first comment)
