The day enslaved black communities in Texas received the news that they were free. 2.5 years AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation. I was never taught about #Juneteenth in school and had to have it explained to me by a black friend just a few years ago (embarrassing, right?). 47 states honor this historic day.
