On Friday, June 19, New York City's Dyke March rolled through DUMBO toward the Manhattan Bridge. Originally reimagined for the era of COVID-19 as a virtual event, this year's Dyke March quickly reorganized to become a Juneteenth event called the "Break the Chains With Love". Organized by activist and former Lesbian Avengers member Valarie Walker, elder members of the queer community mingled with young men, women and nonbinary members of Gen Z, many of whom proudly held "Black Lives Matter" signs aloft. "Given the LGBTQ+ community's long and fraught history with racism," Vogue's Emma Specter (@specteremma) writes, "it was heartening to see so many people—young and old, queer and ally-identified, some in wheelchairs provided by event organizers—show up to support a Juneteenth event centered around Black liberation and joy."
