In the second photo I was completing my second round of TCHP, an aggressive regimen of chemotherapy that waged tiny battles throughout my body. To destroy cancer, you have to destroy a lot of things. This week I’ll be celebrating my first NED birthday!! NED is the medical acronym for “No Evidence of Disease” and the precursor to remission. My body and mind feel strong, my tastebuds in tact, and as you can see, I was able to preserve my hair thanks to a technology known as scalp cooling. Scalp cooling gave me an immense sense of control and normalcy during an otherwise scary time, and it felt so good to forget - even if just for a few hours - the trauma of treatment. SO - for my bday this year, I’m raising funds through @hairtostayorg to pay for two woman to receive scalp cooling during chemo. For many, the financial burden simply doesn’t make it an option. Scalp cooling is expensive and unfortunately not yet covered by insurance (it can range from $1200-$8000 out of pocket depending on the system available; I paid approximately $6000 all-in.) I’m hoping to raise $2400, which will cover the baseline cost of 2 women on automated scalp cooling machines.
