More treasures from Tate's Archive today and this week it's Nigel Henderson⁣'s photographs of East London from the late 1940s to the mid 50s. 📸📸📸
⁣
Henderson was a social and experimental photographer and artist. Exposed to art (and many avant-garde artists) at an early age through his mother's work with Peggy Guggenheim, Henderson paused his artistic career during the Second World War to serve as a pilot in the Coastal Command. He was discharged from his job due to nervous exhaustion but returned to London to study at The Slade.⁣
⁣
In 1949 his wife, Judith Stephens, a social anthropologist, worked for a social observation organisation in Bethnal Green called 'Discover Your Neighbour', which aimed to capture the everyday lives and experiences of working people. The couple moved to Chisenhall Road in the East End of London and armed with a Roloflex camera, Henderson took documentary style photographs of markets, children, shop fronts, and other scenes of London life amongst the post war, industrial ruins which can be seen here. These outdoor 'little theatres', as Henderson called them, remind us of the joy and hope that can be found all around us in tricky times.⁣

These images can be found in Tate's Archive collection: ‘Further papers of Nigel Graeme Henderson (1917-1985)’. Click the link in our bio to explore more.⁣ #TateTreasures
