Layla, Cavachon (15 w/o), Cape Cod Veterinary Specialists, Bourne, MA • “We’ve had her for a month and a half. They told us she was feisty – she gets the zoomies and cries every morning at 7am. She’s my alarm clock. I hadn’t brought her to a dog park before. It just happened out of nowhere. I thought he was just playing with her until I saw blood. The first thing I did was check for a heartbeat. My shirt was covered in blood. The moment I knew it was serious was when we took her to the vet and my dad said ‘she’s dying’. I was crying the whole time – scared crying. The doctor took her and said it would be ok. She had a pneumothorax. She spent three nights and had surgery. We think she’s going to make a full recovery.” @laylathecavachon_ • A note from @eliaswf: This is my cousin and her new puppy. I invited them to the dog park last week when this happened. I had suggested they take their puppy to the small dog run, but it was empty and I was in the main run with Elsa. This was an error on our part. The other dog (a large hound mix) was very focused on Layla before he was let off leash and went right for her. Once the attack began, everybody rushed in to try and separate them. I had never been in that situation before but remembered a few key things I had read about. I stabilized the dog’s head by the collar to control the thrashing. I told everyone to move their hands away, then grabbed the base of the dog’s tail and started firmly bending it upwards as if to break it. The dog let go of Layla almost instantly. This technique may or may not work in another dog attack, but I wanted to share this story in case it's helpful in another situation.
