She was 14.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Despite all this, my mother made a life for herself. She got jobs, married my father, and raised three children. She measured her own success by how much she was able to help her family and serve others. And she never gave up.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Today I'm thinking of her life in terms of the century for American women that it framed. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The passage of the 19th Amendment was an important victory, but an incomplete one. It would take another century’s worth of protest to expand the franchise to Black women and other women of color.
