Yame looking absolutely stunning in the morning light. He’s grown up into a magnificent King considering what he and his brother went through as cubs. They were rescued from a theme park in Spain by Luis and CJ Muñoz, after months of being passed around for tourist photo opportunities and fed watered down cows milk to keep them small (a diet not suitable for lions) Well that certainly worked as they were extremely small for their age when we received them and poor George had metabolic bone disease with several bone fractures and juvenile cataracts on his eyes for good measure. Yame fared much better but developed some ‘anger issues’ in his teens. With constant work and kindness they’ve become wonderful lions. George will always bear the scares of his past and the health issues will no doubt come back to haunt him later on in life. For now they are both happy, healthy and lucky. Not many lions used in the pet and photo ops trade are nearly as lucky. The ones that don’t die usually land up living in substandard conditions for the remainder of their days behind bars. Petting lion cubs may seem like a great idea at the time but stop and consider for a moment what will happen to them after your encounter, no matter where you are in the world.
