This historic moment, along with the suffragists who fought and sacrificed endlessly for it, marks an incredible turning point in our country’s history, but it was only the beginning. Today, we must also acknowledge the movement’s shortcomings for women of color who are almost entirely erased from the narrative, and to this day face restrictions on their right to vote. This year on #NationalWomensEqualityDay let's celebrate the often unsung trailblazers who fought so hard for our rights. Women like Ida B. Wells-Barnett, Anna Julia Cooper, Nannie Helen Burroughs, Mary Church Terrell who were activists, journalists, educators, businesswomen, writers, religious leaders, public speakers, and, most importantly, unstoppable. These women, among many others who came before us, fought tirelessly for this win 100 years ago. They fought so that we could use our voices and we cannot let them down by staying silent this November. It took the lifetimes of so many to enact meaningful change and there is still a lot of work to be done, but it won’t happen unless we all do our part. Call your local representatives and demand that voter ID laws be struck down and voting rights granted to previously incarcerated individuals.
