She is one of the great Southern writer / journalists who made everyday events much more exciting. Always extolling the virtues and adventures of small Southern towns, she famously championed the Mississippi Delta Hot Tamale festival in Greenville, Mississippi and brought many notable figures for a week of tasting all the Southern flavors the region had to offer. Meeting her in person, I was not disappointed. Even more colorful in person, Julia was the type of larger-than-life Southern woman that could tell a story that had you on the edge of your seat. She would make you laugh, make you cry and make you remember that where you are from really matters. I spent many great days with Julia throughout my career.
