I was saddened to hear about the recent passing of Julia Reed. I once visited her in New Orleans during Jazz Fest and spent some quality time with her when she wrote about our home in Golden Beach for Vogue. When I was making a film about Robert Mitchum and I needed a strong woman who could stand tall against him I called on Julia. Together, they were like a house on fire—you just didn’t know at any moment if you’d have to call the FBI to rescue him. Nan and I also both shared her love for the South and for books and dogs. Thank you Julia, for being in our film and for being a lover of the few existing REAL characters left in this world—you were definitely one of them.
