I am the Congresswoman proudly representing the Massachusetts 7th Congressional District. I was first elected to Congress in 2018 as the first Black woman to represent the state of Massachusetts in the House of Representatives. But more than that, I am my mother’s daughter. And my mother, may she rest in power, gave me my roots and my wings. My mother made sure that I knew that as beautiful as it is to be Black and as proud as I should be to be Black, I was being born into a struggle—a continuous struggle. And she had an expectation that I would do my part in that struggle. Whether you are in the streets protesting police violence, supporting your neighbors through mutual aid amid this pandemic, or contributing to wildfire relief funds—we all have a role to play in that continuous struggle for a more equitable and just world. But, while we endure this struggle, it is critical to remember that joy too is an act of resistance. At a time where we are drinking from a firehose of insult and assault on our civil liberties, a time where this administration is trying to take our very rights and freedoms—do not let them take our joy too. A penchant for joy is something that Amy and I share. And while I don’t spend my evenings writing and performing stand-up, I have been known to earn some laughs on Twitter and Zoom.
