“I was photographing at the Civil Rights Center in Atlanta when I discovered a walkway inscribed with the names of all the great freedom fighters. I came across the plaque for Joseph and Evelyn Lowery and remembered that they lived nearby. Although Reverend Joseph became a household name after delivering the benediction at President Obama’s first inauguration, it was tricky to get in touch with them—I think they sought some peace and quiet their later years after fighting for decades to improve the lives of the poor, promote racial justice and the bring an end to the Vietnam War. But we kept calling, and eventually Evelyn answered the phone, inviting us to visit their home. It was like a museum inside, with photographs documenting their protest activities around the world. Evelyn was reluctant to be photographed, because she didn’t have a chance to go to the beauty parlor before I came. But I persuaded her to be in just one by asking her to give Joseph a kiss on the cheek.”
