In Nigeria, locals have been taking to the streets for weeks to protest police brutality. For activist Opal Tometi (@opalayo), Nigeria’s protests are all too familiar. As one of the cofounders of the #BlackLivesMatter movement, she’s used to being part of the fight for Black liberation. And the movement against the controversial Nigerian police unit known as SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) is particularly relevant to her as a first-generation Nigerian American.
At the link in our bio, Tometi spoke to Vogue about the new solidarity video she helped create, what America has to learn from Nigeria’s protests, and what she wishes the world understood about her work. Photographed by @stephen.tayo
