“This image was one of the first I made for Cursed by Night. After getting permission to photograph this pair, I had to move quickly. The second I put my tripod on the ground, I saw the car about to pass by slowly. I had to get the exhaust in shot even if the subjects weren’t completely in focus — it added a mystery to the image. Bearing in mind the work of the Black Lives Matter movement, I chose this image because I didn’t want people to forget how easy it is for a black man and child to lose their lives in America today.”
