Oscar purred his way into our lives 13 years ago. We carried him the short walk home in a small cardboard carrier and as we opened it in the living room of our first apartment together, he popped his little head out, purring loudly. We were smitten.

We moved around a lot with him and he always took it in his stride, adapting to each new home and making the entire neighborhood fall in love with him. To know him was to love him. He charmed everyone he met. He was feisty and playful. Willful until the very end. I took delight in his autonomy and independence. He was a ferocious little hunter and yet he loved to snuggle and was so affectionate and loving. I would often fall asleep without him and then wake in the middle of the night to find him tucked into me, purring. I’ll miss kissing the tips of his ears and holding him close. I’ll miss everything.

Caring for Oscar brought me such joy. He was my anchor. Home, was wherever Oscar was. Being his parent taught me about responsibility, patience and the beauty of unconditional love. He raised me just as much as I raised him.

Although heartbreakingly painful, it was a privilege to spend the last day of his life with him; it was a privilege to spend any day with him. I was honored to hold him in my arms as he took his last breath. I missed him before he even left.

I have lost a piece of my heart.
