I read this Mary Gaitskill a few weeks ago and keep thinking about this passage as it relates to: a president who refuses to accept his loss, the millions more white people who voted for the platform of white grievance in 2020 than in 2016, the mass denial of a deadly virus from those who believe that wearing a mask is an infringement on their personal freedom (their right to kill themselves and others), and the choice—when faced with one’s own vulnerability—to let oneself feel like a loser, or to try to “beat it” by victimizing someone else.
