Afterwards I tried to raise this issue diplomatically in the staff debrief. It was not well received. I was asked “who gets to police appropriation?” several times. The next lecture given seems to have had new elements added to reflect what I had suggested was a blind spot on race. In the lecture itself, all of the names of women of colour were spelt wrong. A recording of the lecture has not been made available to the department or the students, despite multiple requests. When the slides were uploaded to our learning platform, some of the typos have been corrected, but new references which weren’t in the original lecture have been added. I find this dishonest and cynical. Having raised these and other issues, the department then decided to block my invitation of a friend and fellow songwriter to co-facilitate a zoom workshop with me. The email I was sent justifying this de-invitation is above. The students were not told by the department that @devhynes had been de-invited, so I have informed them myself. I have withdrawn my labour from in-person teaching, as I do not believe the music department is fulfilling their duty of care towards their students, so they certainly do not care about my well-being or safety. The dept has not explained the reasons why I am no longer teaching beyond “a contractual issue”. I hope to hold my final zoom workshop with the students on the 30th of November. I make this post today so that perhaps they and others might understand the background to this issue better. I am sorry to my students that this has disrupted your teaching further in an already fraught academic year.」11月20日 23時14分 - kindnessmusic

Around a month ago, the white academic who leads the module I am currently teaching in songwriting @goldsmithsmusic gave a lecture in which the issue of race/appropriation in music was sidestepped and minimised.
