Due to the spinal cord damage, the bladder - brain connection in Rexie’s body stopped permanently so he doesn’t even feel when his bladder is full and he needs to pee. So he does not do it, never. That’s the reason he’s called a special needs cat as he needs a special care in order to survive. So it’s my job to empty his bladder for him. It’s done by squeezing his bladder and making urine come out (it’s not hard but it requires some practice under an experienced person or vet’s supervision if you’re new to this). I express his bladder 3-4 times a day and each time it takes me about 3 minutes to do that.
There are cats with a similar condition that have no bladder control but in a different way - they pee leak every time their bladder gets full - that’s why they have to wear diapers. But they need to be expressed too to have their bladder fully emptied to avoid any kind of inflammation or infection.
As for defecation, a lot of handicats poop uncontrollably wherever they happen to be when it starts coming out. As for Rexie, it requires some sort of stimulation to make him go so it’s my job as well. Pooping him is just as easy, he’s regular and it’s a 1-2 minute process. He pees and poops in the toilet through the manual stimulation so there’s never any mess and he’s always clean.
As for litter training, it’s impossible since cats in this condition live without the need to urinate/defecate. It’s like living a life where you don’t ever need to go potty; pretty sweet, but in biological terms it’s a must do for the obvious reason. That’s why they need an assistance to avoid fatal consequences.
If you’re just starting, it’s important to make your cat feel comfortable during these procedures so they don’t feel scared while they’re still getting used to the process. The procedures are easy once you get enough practice and learn the ropes. Everyone can do it. The hardest part is dedication and willingness to do it for the whole life of your cat to help them live. But it’s the least that can be done for the love the cat will give you in return ❤️” #catsofinstagram
