Their prehistoric, saber-like tusks arc elegantly towards the ice, growing to three feet (a meter) or longer over a lifetime. Yet despite their fearsome appearance, they are surprisingly gentle. This male was easily the largest walrus I had ever seen, but my intention was to paint him as the mellow, contemplative individual he was by contrasting his formidable presence with the serenity of an Arctic landscape.
