Photo by @iantehphotography / This is from one of my earliest trips to the U.S., circa 2000. I remember dashing to keep up with this stretch limo as it passed under a U.S. flag in Times Square during rush hour. At the time, the scene felt like a visual shorthand for America, her excesses and a free-market economic system on steroids fueling her dynamism. I loved the city, and of course, that was before 9/11, the 2008 global financial crisis, and more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. The world certainly seems much more complicated, polarized, and angry now—and none more so than in the U.S. After the recent 96 angst-ridden hours, America has a new president-elect who seeks to heal deep national divisions while demonstrating a willingness to rejoin international efforts to face urgent global challenges like a warming planet. Civilization can be a thin veneer—often taken for granted, it doesn’t take much for chaos to set in.
