Gilford’s father was a rodeo champion in Colorado, and Gilford became familiar with rodeo culture in his youth, one he came to associate with patriarchy and homophobia.  Until one day in 2016, the sound of Dolly Parton’s voice brought him to an International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA) booth at a Pride event in San Francisco. Soon after, he went to his first IGRA rodeo in the Southwest. “It was a revelation because I was, like, wow, you can exist safely in these spaces and find community and do so many of the things that I love doing—but in a queer community,” Gilford says.  His return to the rodeo resulted in four years of traveling throughout Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and California to document rural queer life—and the radical acceptance and community he discovered within the IGRA.
