Photo by Cristina Mittermeier @Cristina Mittermeier / I could just make out the black-and-white silhouette of an orca before she suddenly broke through the shroud of visibility and bolted straight for @PaulNicklen and I. At first, I was a little alarmed as she barreled toward us. But at the last possible second, she suddenly dropped a jellyfish between the two of us and then swam away. A jellyfish? I had to wipe my mask to understand what I was looking at. Two minutes later, the orca returned to take back the jellyfish before vanishing once more. Was this a gift, or perhaps a gesture of accomplishment or an invitation to play? Orcas are incredibly intelligent animals, and I was humbled by the opportunity to document such a healthy population in the icy waters of Lofoten in Norway. Follow me @Cristina Mittermeier to learn how you can help protect the future of wild orcas as I work with @OnlyOne and my team @SeaLegacy to preserve their beautiful habitat.
