As well as supporting young people who find themselves homeless now, Centrepoint also works tirelessly to try to prevent more young people becoming homeless in the future, with the ultimate aim of ending youth homelessness in the UK. They run a free telephone, email and online chat service where young people can share their concerns, receive information about what they are entitled to, and be put in touch with the appropriate services.

Over January to September 2020, the Helpline supported 4,456 young people who turned to Centrepoint at their time of need. While the beginning period of lockdown saw a spike of 50% increase of calls, September 2020 proved to be the busiest ever month, with the increase in calls correlating with job losses and the pressures of lockdown.

The outlook for young people accessing the Helpline remains challenging, with the furlough scheme ending and the impact of cold weather about to factor in; Centrepoint expect that the Helpline will be needed more than ever as we finish the year.
