There were posts on social media asking for any help they could get, but stock was limited in supermarkets and person to person contact was restricted at the time. Fiona Laing, Inventory and Planning Analyst at Mars NZ, and I organized for pallets of damaged Whiskas cat food to be delivered to my own storage facility. Once it had arrived, Kim Dunnett-Smith (one of our wholesaler representatives), my daughter and I sorted through all the stock, resealing the damaged bags and making them ready for transport. We then used our own cars to deliver the food to some of the charities with the greatest need. Previously, my daughter and I had raised funds for Gutter Kitties, Auckland’s largest no-kill cat rescue center. We attended cat shows to sell raffle tickets in our local community, with all the prizes donated from Mars. We’d also assisted in bake sales and sold cookies to raise funds for Gutter Kitties at a time when the charity had a $10,000 vets bill to pay. The bake sales would usually raise between $500-$600 and the raffles over $300. I’ve enjoyed sharing this experience with my daughter, showing her how something small can make an incredible difference to so many. During a time of great uncertainty, I’m glad we were able to provide some certainty for the shelters, so they knew they’d able to feed and look after all the animals in their care, and hopefully find them loving homes. As a veterinary nurse myself, I’ve seen the difference that good nutrition, a great home and a loving family can make to any animal. We have 3 cats of our own, Monsta (19), Teddy (4) and Griffin (6 months). Monsta and Teddy are both rescue cats and we adopted Teddy from Gutter Kitties. They could’ve had a much different life if they hadn’t been rescued by the shelters and then adopted by us. In the words of Winnie the Pooh: “sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart” and, for us, that is our family of three ginger cats. #EndingPetHomelessness」12月10日 7時52分 - marsglobal
