How about something shiny for this gloomy afternoon? Even better, one of these holds hot chocolate.
This chocolate pot, creamer and jar (all ca. 1893) come from our @cooperhewitt's collection. They were decorated by sisters Emily and Mary Healey and manufactured by Chryso Ceramics, their thriving ceramics decoration business at the turn of the 20th century.
Emily—a science teacher in Washington, D.C.—was working in her lab when she accidently dropped uranium salt into some heavy oil. She fired this compound onto a scrap of china, which created a brilliantly colored surface. After experimenting, she started working with gold to cover porcelain, similar to an ancient Chinese enameling process.
