In the late 1960s, artist Frederick Hammersley took a break from his primary medium, painting, to explore other methods of artistic production. During this time, he was introduced to Art1, one of the earliest programs for making art using a computer.

Without a screen or monitor to display the final image, users relied on punch cards, which were read by the program as executable commands. With practice, users could visualize the final image before production, and select appropriate punch cards for the desired result.

This is just one of hundreds of computer-generated drawings Hammersley produced from 1968-1970. Using a limited set of letters, punctuation marks, and numbers, Hammersley created layered and complex drawings that bridged the gap between artistic practice and emerging technologies.
