He Was The First
On this Throwback Thursday, we’re going back to Aug. 26, 1942, when Howard P. Perry was the first African-American recruit to arrive at Montford Point. With 119 other recruits, he began the grueling process of becoming a Marine there, where African American recruits trained separately, near Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Although Alfred Masters was the first African-American Marine to enlist, Perry was the first to arrive for recruit training.
From 1942 to 1949, approximately 20,000 more African-American Marines would endure racism and oppression in a segregated military for an opportunity to train there and defend their country in the midst of World War II.
