I saw UNDERGROUND in Caracas in 1995, and those words stayed with me ever since; for some unknowing reason they touched me very deeply. Little did I suspect at that time how close...how brutally premonitory, those words would resonate with me as a Venezuelan...20 years later. The final scene of ONCE UPON A TIME IN VENEZUELA, CONGO MIRADOR made me remember the end of UNDERGROUND…the same narrative force, the same poetic power. I understood that even when the causes and contexts are very different, the pain of losing a country is the same; it is something that millions of Venezuelans share with many other peoples, many miles away…and that made me feel less alone. Feeling less alone where you have nowhere to return to,it is a very important thing. In ONCE UPON A TIME IN VENEZUELA, CONGO MIRADOR @anapalupza manages to synthesize, in a minimal story and with overwhelming visual beauty, our tragedy as Venezuelans; the drift of a country that was once great and prosperous ... and in which we once had the opportunity to dream.
