Which is triple the population of Montana. In 2012 we were able to convince the esteemed Chris Johns to allow us to start up the Nat Geo @instagram account. To our surprise the National Geographic Society thought this would be a good idea. At the time the style was "insta" - a reflection of what was happening at the moment. Images shot on smart phones with classic (read rudimentary) filters to add to the flavor. Going into the expedition we had no idea this would morph into the global phenomenon that it is. While my favorite first is "Namaste", a sandstone sport route in the Kolob area of @zionnps, having the first picture on one of the most visited social media sites might be a sillier footnote to my life of adventure. One would have to "doom scroll" the Nat Geo account with a high speed connection for about as long as it takes freeze a bucket of water to get to the first post. To save you the hassle, the following are a few from the expedition that were shared by @natgeo. 1. A garden and statuary in Kathmandu. These small spaces are a favorite part of Nepal. 2. @emilyaharrington on the summit. With the help of the @benegas_brothers we beamed this image from the South Col. 3. @anjin_san and @kristoffer.erickson working the slide camera. 4. Tent life with @coryrichards, Kris and @hilareenelson. 5. Raw and unpolished summit pic for @rebeccaexplore. She still has the small flag. Thanks @sadiequarrier for trusting us. 6. Basecamp Chorten photo with @phil_henderson, @bookofsamuel and @iamsimonemoro added to the mix. 7. Thank goodness real photographers tend the @natgeo page. I'd post blurry pictures of yaks and think it was "art". Thanks to the Sherpa team @panuru_sherpa & @jibanghimire for making it happen. Props to @montanastateuniversity for the science component and respect for @mayoclinic for the physiology work at altitude.
