In March of 1968, almost 4,000 Howard University students occupied and surrounded the school's administration building. They demanded more courses on African American history and culture, disciplinary charges dropped against student protestors and the resignation of the president of the university. When they needed to boost morale, the students played @curtislmayfield’s “Keep on Pushing”.

Curtis Mayfield started his career as a gospel singer, then wrote love songs with The Impressions. By the time he wrote the soundtrack for 1970's Super Fly, he had become the voice of the Civil Rights movement. Mayfield grew up in Chicago and bore witness to police brutality. He saw his peers become politically and socially outspoken. He wanted to write music that promoted harmony.

Mayfield's song “We're a Winner” was unapologetic in celebrating African American achievement. While the students protested at Howard, it was number one on the charts, despite being banned from many radio stations across the country. When the protesters finished their negotiations, and their needs were met, they blasted “We're a Winner”. #BlackHistoryMonth
