Named after a quote in Helen Hester’s “Technically Female: Women, Machines and Hyperemployment” the title refers to how we today take on typically female coded work through technology. Checking ourselves out at a grocery store instead of having the cashier do it for us, happily using Siri, who is performing a form of old school assistant job, even though it does require more active work from our part. These tasks Hester refers to as hyperemployment, after Ian Bogost coining of the term, which refers to tasks taken on through technology that often are described as “labour saving” but actually transfers the labour onto someone else, for example the costumer, instead of a paid cashier.  We are doing all this micro labor which historically been feminized low status jobs but it is becoming socially upgraded through the filter of the machine. So instead of Donna Haraway’s famous quote “I’d rather be a cyborg than a goddess” Hester cheekily suggest that this is more a case of “I’d rather be an iPhone than a woman”.」2月24日 3時21分 - arvidabystrom
