Architecture structures our daily lives. It shapes our homes, streets, neighborhoods, cities and more. But who gets to create and occupy these spaces?

This question is at the heart of "Reconstructions: Architecture and Blackness in America," now on view in our galleries.

Eleven newly commissioned projects take us from the front porches of Miami and the bayous of New Orleans to an avenue in Oakland and public housing in Syracuse, reclaiming the spaces of Black life in 10 American cities. These projects trace how anti-Black racism is designed into the built environment, but also seek to redefine what architecture can be.
