A play by play of the scene: I was out here just trying to show off my freshly sewn pants but my dad is up to doing cooler things so he deservedly took the spotlight. (My mom and I giddily chuckle from afar.)
My family’s relationship dynamic has had its fair share of complications, but as times passes on, I’ve been savoring precious moments like these :) cherishing my parent’s safety and well-being extra hard rn.
To be real, I’ve been in denial to face my emotions regarding the rising hate crimes directed at Asians since it affects me more intimately than other headlines. What shook me from my numbness was hearing from my mother that her Zoom yoga group of elderly Asian women have had to discuss ways to avoid being a target of the violence by wearing a hat/hood to hide their hair and covering up as much of their face as possible to hide their asian identity. The sad part is that they have been practicing these precautions for months as a result of the increasing attacks towards members of the Asian community in close proximity to where they frequently visit/ live in.
My parents are healthy, joyful, and high-spirited individuals, but they are also 70 years old and easily fit the description of the victims of these hate incidents that are transpiring on the same streets that my parents frequently shop for groceries or go for walks on.
In moments of darkness, here’s a reminder to look for some light and hug/reach out to your loved ones - especially if they are at an advanced age.
