The connection between the Ballades of Chopin and the poems of Adam Mickiewicz is often discussed. 1st-3rd Ballades are connected with works with clear drama and narrative, such as "Conrad Währenrod", "Sifitejanka" and "Sifitej". However, "The Three Budrys", which is connected with the 4th Ballade, is very different from the three aforementioned works and has a deeper meaning. The philosophy in this poem that the most important thing in life is not to acquire wealth or honour, but to live with love, is very much in keeping with the Polish national character. Chopin also felt a sense of discomfort with the glamorous society in which he mainly worked, and this was what drew him to this work. His youth in Poland, with friends and family, was a memory that remained with him long after he had left his homeland, and it became connected with his ideals of life.
In this programme, I am portraying Chopin's 'ideals'. His ideals for life, for music and for his homeland - many of them were unattainable for him, and similar to his longing for a homeland that he could never return to. Op.42 - a critique of the waltz, which had begun to be seen as popular music - and on Poland, where the great traditions of simplicity were being lost; op.52 - a tribute to love, simplicity and the Polish nation; op.60 - a longing for a warm and peaceful life; and op. 53 - a pride of his homeland. I hope that I could share with you the transitions of his personality.
