When we had our sport in X Games, all athletes agreed we would not wear race suits because we did not like looking like skiers. That is not what our sport represents. Snowboarding itself in its roots was the direct opposite of what skiing lifestyle represented. However, since X Games no longer holds our event, this has allowed countries to change the race style to custom race pants that are getting tighter and tighter, and looking no different from a downhill suit. My concern with this movement is that money is not staying within the snowboard industry. Athletes have to buy expensive, special suits to be in the same league as all other racers. Essentially, snowboarders are having to buy ski apparel and not being able to buy into their own snowboard industry and help support the industry health or growth in the sport. My second concern is it drastically removes the marketability of our sport as well as individual athletes. What snowboard company would support our sport if we all wear ski equipment???? This also drastically increases the cost to entry into the sport therefore hurting the future generations that are trying to get more involved in snowboarding. Snowboarding should be more accessible to the masses. So yes, I am a racer and this would be the fastest suit, and I am unfortunately in a position that I have to wear this suit otherwise I will be at a huge disadvantage come my next race in China. A possible solution would be limit the amount of stretch allowed in the materials and to clearly have two separate pieces (top and bottom) not connected in any fashion. Limiting the stretch of the materials would make more form fitting outfits more restrictive and therefore would not work for the movements we need to perform.
