In 1972, we were one of the first countries in the world to form a ministry solely dedicated to the environment. Our aim was to transform Singapore into one of the cleanest and healthiest cities in the region. The Ministry of Environment became the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources in 2004, and subsequently the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment in 2020, with a new focus on sustainability, and major initiatives such as carbon mitigation, coastal protection, and zero waste. From food handling, waste disposal, to our water infrastructure, MSE has evolved with the times and steadily improved our living conditions. On World Environment Day today, let’s look back on Singapore’s progress over the past 50 years, and continue to work together to build a clean, green and sustainable home for future generations.
