LOST ON A RIVER — NORSE PROJECTS X GEOFF MCFETRIDGE

“When I was a kid the short film Paddle to the Sea seemed to always be on TV. I grew up in St. Albert, Albert. A small town in Canada. It was the late 70s and we only had local TV. 2 channels over the air. No cable. It tells the story of a boy who carves a wooden figure in a canoe and places him on a river where he floats all the way to the sea. Along the way, the story of the canoe shows us the connectedness of our ecosystem and places the viewer in the middle of an adventure clearly determined by fate. It is well crafted but also feels like a collection of moments that just happened, but were captured on film.

Looking back I try to think of how things like Paddle to the Sea affected me. How what I saw or did as a kid affected my understanding of making things, loving the outdoors, art, and adventures.

Watching it in my Los Angeles studio I am transported to long boring days in my parent's basement. Underground on the leading edge of a frozen prairie. Snow pushed up against basement windows that barely let in the weak winter sun.

Forty years later I have a block of bass wood in a vice on my table. I chisel and carve at it to find a form. I shape the bottom to give my best impression of what a canoe looks like. The block of wood becomes a guy asleep in a canoe, two paddles at his side.

With some friends, I then fly to Montana. We pack food, camping and fishing gear into a raft and a canoe. Racing the coming winter we drive towards the Canadian border. The arranged shuttle driver has big hands like paws. He knows the area because he used to hunt bears there.

On a gravel shore, I kneel to slip my carved paddler into the Flathead River. We follow it. Paddling, sleeping on the ground, fishing, drawing, taking photos and filming for three days.

Seeing Paddle to the Sea as a child created an impression on me, and the project for Norse is in some ways an answer to that. To manifest an experience out of a memory, a feeling; is a type of art-making itself.”
