With a population of just over 50,000, you can *feel* the gender imbalance in one of Denmark’s most isolated regions, the Faroe Islands. ⁠

“Faroese men are traditional, but the women are more modern,” says Òlavur, a 22-year-old resident of Skálafjørður in the Faroe Islands, where many women leave to study in Copenhagen and other European cities, and men stay to fish and farm. “She doesn’t even knit.” ⁠

In photographer Andrea Gjestvang’s images, work and home are represented in blood-stained still lifes and intimate portraits of domesticity, understored by images of the vast, sometimes intense landscape.
