It's tempting to just start playing a new piece.
And sometimes, that should be encouraged!

But more often than not, having a music prepping routine for new music can make learning a new piece much more effortless - and expedite your progress.
👉🏼This particularly goes for beginners and intermediate players!

Here are a few steps you can do before diving into your new musical piece:
📝 Number all measures (also known as "bar numbers").
📝 Mark where the loudest and softest parts in the piece will be. This will give you a set spectrum of dynamics.
📝 Understand basic theory: Find out if your piece is in minor or Major, how fast you should aim for it to be in the end, etc.
📝 Translate any terms in the sheet music. Andante? Moderate walking tempo. Vivace? Lively & fast. Poco a poco? Little by little.
📝 If you're not working on a solo piece: Look at the score (piano part) and see where you play unisono (same melody/notes at the same time).

How do you prep new music?
Save this post for your practice! 🎻
