Ortega experimented with papier-mâché to give three-dimensionality to his painting. Together with master papier-mâché makers from Matera, the artist created terracotta bas-reliefs from which he made plaster casts in which the paper mixture was moulded. The works thus modelled were then fixed on a wooden scaffold and finally painted.
