Talk about an egg-cellent Easter Sunday! 🥚🐢

These precious Loggerhead hatchlings were released back to Shelly Beach on the NSW Central Coast on Sunday following an epic egg rescue.

The eggs were excavated from Shelly Beach on March 29 when temperatures dropped, and 130 eggs were brought to Taronga Wildlife Hospital where they were kept in incubators for optimal temperature and humidity, and an entire team regularly monitored their progress and health. Normally, Loggerhead turtles lay their eggs in south-east Queensland, and the nest on Shelly Beach was the southernmost nest on record for the endangered species.

Being able to release them back into the wild was an enormous group effort, and we feel privileged to have together with @nswnationalparks , @centralcoastcouncil , @nswturtlewatch and @marinewildliferescuecc been able to help these vulnerable loggerhead hatchlings.

Loggerhead turtles are endangered, and climate change, habitat and food source loss, entanglement in nets, ingestion of marine debris including fishing line and hooks are all major threats to Australia’s marine turtle. It’s important that we all do our part to respect and protect our unique wildlife.
